CIAC is a research unit evaluated by the Foundation for Science and Technology, created in 2008 as a result of the merger of two non-funded research centers: the Center for Research in Communication and Arts Sciences (University of the Algarve) and the Center for Research in Theater and Cinema (Superior School of Theater and Cinema of IPL). Currently, it brings together researchers from the University of Algarve (host institution), the School of Theater and Cinema (Lisbon Polytechnic Institute), where it has a polo, the Higher Institute of Maia, the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria , of the Higher Institute of Advanced Technologies and the Open University, institution where it has another active pole associated with the Doctoral Degree in Digital Media Art.

CIAC has been developing innovative research in the field of artistic studies (visual arts, cinema, theater) and cultural, communication and, more recently, literary studies (digital archives, critical digital editions), combining the production of diffusion platforms to the study of the forms of communication of scientific knowledge in the designated areas. Since its origin, it has maintained an interdisciplinary character. It aims to develop applied research and research networks in the arts (in its broadest sense) and communication and to implement laboratories of artistic creation in the areas of Theater, Cinema and other arts, namely in the Mediterranean region.

Since its founding, it has actively promoted and collaborated in various partnerships in the artistic and cultural activities of the Algarve, its headquarters, through specific agreements of collaboration with City Councils, Cultural Associations and with the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve: has become a   relevant stakeholder in the region. The research produced in the CIAC is often disseminated by the surrounding community through the multiple extension activities promoted, as well as discussed in international networks.
